I found this picture online and I really like it as it captures a mood I would like to include in my teaser trailer. Its very unposed and I like that and it shows the obvious closeness between the friends.

After collecting the results I have put together a bar chart to show the four most popular film genres. You can see that romantic comedys and chick flicks are the most popular. This is the genre I will use for my teaser trailer.

Thursday 3 December 2009

After collecting back in my questionnaire I have put together a series of graphs to show the results. Twenty five people from a range of ages and genders took part. The graph on the left here shows the age and gender percentages of those who took part.

Marking my own work...

So far for the work I have completed I would give myself a level three. I have shown research into similar products by analysing a number of different teaser trailers and also the films themselves from different genres. The presentation of my research and planning is clear and easily accesed online. I have shown my skill in the use of digital technology through uploading a powerpoint using SlideShare and by presenting my work electronically on my blog. Although there is not evidence of work and organisation into location, actors, costumes or props, this is all to come I will also upload my storyboard, shotlists and script as I go along.

My target for the rest of this term until Christmas is to complete all of my research and planning to begin filming in January. Things I still need to complete are:
  • Questionnaire results
  • A final idea of genre and target audience and analysis of teaser trailers which are similar
  • A few possible final ideas for my teaser trailer and draft storyboards
  • Costume, location, actors, props and sound ideas
  • A very final idea for my teaser trailer with a detailed storyboard ready to begin filming.

Music Video..

TaylorSwift- You belong with me

I like this song and also the video because it deals with a major issue relevant to teenagers and young adults, my possible target audience, in their lives. It is about a girl who falls in love with a guy who is already with someone else. The video shows their happy ending but the heartbreak before that. I like this idea that is portrayed through the video as its unique and has not been used before.

So far so good...

After reviewing the to do list I uploaded earlier on my blog all the research I have left to do is:

1. Collect back the results from my target audiences questionairre and create a way to display this.
2. Decide on a genre for my film and watch some teaser trailers from that genre, analyse them and upload them.
3. Decide on my final idea and upload costume, music, actor and location ideas.

Target Audiences Questionnaire...

I have put together a simple questionnaire, made up of eight questions, to send out to people to find out what the audience want. Once this is done I can put together the results and come to a decision about the type of film I am going to make. I am going to attach this electronically to an email and send it around to family, friends and work colleagues.

Kidulthood Analysis..

Kidulthood is a 2006 British drama film about the life of several teenagers in Ladbroke Grove and Latimer Road area of Inner West London. It was directed by Menhaj Huda and written by Noel Clarke, who also stars in the film and directed the sequel, Adulthood. I decided to analyse this film because it deals with many modern issues experienced by teenages today. For example; teenage relationships, abuse, drugs, gang warfare, sexual relationships, pregnancy and suicide. If my film was directed at a target audience of younger adults and teenagers it would be easy for them to relate to many of the issues within my film. Another thing I noticed throughout the film was the heavy use of taboo language, again this is something that appeals the the teenage/younger adult catagory. Throughout the film they use non-diegetic soundtracks to create suspension, build tension and to help portray the mood to the audience.

Blair Witch Project Analysis...

I decided to watch the Blair Witch Project as it is completely filmed using a hand held camera. Whilst watching I found that it was a good effect but after a while it gave me a headache. The use of the hand held is explained at the beginning, through saying that it was all real footage and was only found after the bodies were found, this excuses its use through out. It was interesting to watch and as the audience I knew that everything was from the perspective of the camera man/women but if I was to use this effect I would only use it for certain sections of my film. The film is slightly filmed in the style of a documentary, with informal interviews with the other members of the "witch team" and people living in the town. Throughout the female makes references to a project and this explains the documentary style film. I did not particulary enjoy watching this film as it wasnt very interesting and did not have much of a story line although I can understand why horror is a popular genre to make.

Teaser Trailer Idea's Slide Show

Here is my idea's slide show that was shown to my class group and also some possible target audiences.

Teaser Trailer Plan...

For this project the things I intend to do are:

  • An idea's presentation, presented to my class group and also the possible target audiences, I will also upload my presentation to my blog.
  • Following this I will create a questionaire to be completed by possible target audiences, I shall also upload this and the results.
  • I will watch and analyse a number of films from different genres and write this up on my blog, this will help me to decide the genre of film I want to create.
  • After choosing my genre I shall watch teaser trailers from my chosen genre and analyse them.
  • After this I shall write up a few final idea's, working out possible costumes, actors, location and shot types.
  • I shall then decide on a final idea and write this up in detail including costume, actors, location and shot types.

Whilst going through my planning stage I shall upload all videos I watch and any photos which inspire me.

  • After tall this we will photograph for our storyboard and upload this to the blog.

District 9 Teaser Trailer...

http://www.spike.com/video/district-9-teaser/3165436

It opens with an establishing shot of the sunset and then a women talking to the camera. It is a documentary style trailer with lots of interviews of people talking directly to the camera. Titles are used throughout and non diegetic which increases in tempo and adds to the suspense. Big names are used which suggests the genre and appeals to the audience. Peter Jackson, who appeals to a massive fan base. The trailer suggests that the film makers are playing around with generic conventions.

The Da Vinci Code Teaser Trailer...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNQ0ExXOWW0

This teaser trailer doesn't actually show you any footage from the actual film which adds mystery. If the audience hadn't read the book they would have no idea about what the film is about, this also adds to the mystery. Dramatic voice overs "men have died to reveal it" also adds to the enigma. The film would appeal to those who have read the book and also those that haven't, and the trailer gives off the sense that it is a thriller. The trailer gives big names to attract audiences and also a release date at the end. It doesn't show any characters.

V for Vendetta Teaser Trailer...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71qo8T6sBvQ

No real direction of the film is given in this teaser trailer, it creates lots of enigma's which creates audience interest and causes people to talk about the film so word spreads. It uses lots of quick cuts of action filled shots and uses longer shots to create more mystery. This lets the audience know it is a action film. It uses text, "created by the makers of the Matrix triology". This bring in a fan based audience of those who enjoyed the Matrix films. It also uses a popular actors name "Natalie Portman" to bring in an audience. The catchphrase "Remember Remember the 5th of November" is used which is the only clue to what the film is about, Guy Fawkes.

Alice in Wonderland Teaser Trailer...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VHRz1S_kYI

So this teaser trailer starts with the Disney logo which all audiences can immediately relate to. The backing track starts slow at the beginning and then gradually increases in volume and tempo as the events evolve and become more exciting. Big names are used in this teaser trailer which brings in fan groups, such as Johnny Depp, which the trailer is very much focused around, and Tim Burton who is also a popular director. Throughout the trailer, the well known character, the Rabbit and the Mad Hatter are shown which the audience can connect with the book and the trailer also takes the audience back to when they read the book and through this make them want to see the film. The trailer leaves a lot to the imagination and uses the famous catchphrase "Your late for a very important date".

Fame Teaser Trailer...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGZ9AZg2IaE

An adaptation of the original Fame film, made in 1980. The trailer starts with a big title "It all begins with a dream" and slow music with long clips of a girl singing and playing the piano. It then switches to the well know "theme" song, Fame - Irene Cara, which all fans will automatically be able to relate to the original film and theatre production. Fast cuts of action filled clips let the audience know the theme of the film, faded together with blackouts and titles. Some of the clips are shown through lights which all add up together to make the word "Fame", this title and the release month are the only two things given away by the trailer. "In theatres everywhere this september" also suggests to the audience that the film is based around dance and the theatre. A grown up High School Musical.

A2 Portfolio...

Ok, so for my media studies A2 portfolio I have to produce a teaser trailer, promotional poster and a front cover for a magazine.
To begin this task I am going to watch and analyse teaser trailers to get the feel of what I am going to do and the key conventions and features of teaser trailer. I shall run a questionnaire to help me decide which genre to make it and then I shall research costumes props and locations.

Creativity...

How did you use media forms to come up with something new and original?

I used film openings from a number of films to decide on the genre of the film I wanted to make. I then read several newspaper and magazine articles to help me come up with some inspiration for the storyline of my film. I decided to use the story of a young girl who was suffering from heart problems to base my storyline around and adapted it to fit some of my own ideas.

Digital Technology...

How did you use the media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

I used media technologies in the research stage of my portfolio by analysing the opening scenes to a number of different films in different genres. I did this using DVD's and also websites online such as YouTube and the BBC iplayer.
Planning my film involved taking pictures from websites such as Google Images and copying and pasting them onto a storyboard using the program Microsoft Publisher.
When it came to constructing my opening to my film I used a digital video camera and also a microphone to record sounds straight onto my film. When it came to editing my film I uploaded the clips onto the computer and used Ulead Editing Suite to cut and paste them together, add an audio sound track and titles.
Evaluating my film I wrote it the evalution out in draft and then copied and pasted it onto my blog, again using the internet.

New Project...!

So for our new project to "keep us going" until we actually start our A2's we have to make two films and keep our blog updated as well. We have to make one film, 2 - 3 minutes long which shows the school to the prospective parents of year seven students. And another film, also 2 - 3 minutes long which is to show to prospective funders of the school who may invest some money. The overall feeling of both films will be very different. One will show the school in a positive light and will persuade parents to send their children to Therfield and one will show the school in a slightly negative way and will persuade investors to put money towards helping the school.

Evaluation Again...

My opening to a film is called Hope. I have used the style of a homemade video whilst my title’s run to fit in with my planned synopsis. I chose the genre romantic comedy for my film as firstly, a personal choice and also because my research showed up that it was a popular choice for the female audience and also occasionally highly rated by males. I also came to this decision after watching and commenting on a selection of films which came under the romantic comedy subtitle. The intended audience for my film was females. The story within my film touches hearts and would hopefully appeal to a wide age range audience.

My media product uses conventions seen in a real media product as it shows the opening two minutes to a film. Like in a real media product as characters appear on the screen so do the actors names so that the audience can relate character to actor. I have used a popular style to do this in, using a easily legible font and fading the names in and out as the characters appear. Also, like in a real media product I have chosen a non- diegetic sound track to play over the film. This automatically creates a mood for the audience to pick up on and adds dramatic effect, like the sound of the heart monitor used towards the end of my media product.

My opening film credits does not represent a particular social group as the characters represent a mother and daughter relation. Connotations of my opening suggest that the person who ‘made’ the home made film, in the style I have filmed it, is very proud of their daughter and wishes to share moments of her life with others as many families stereotypically do.

The kind of media institution which may want to distribute my media product is a company like Working Title. This is because the intended romantic comedy genre of my film fits in with the films directed by Richard Curtis and also distributed by Working Title. The film captures a mood of sorrow and also of triumph which are regularly seen in his films, for example Love Actually and Notting hill. The Todorov narrative style is also similar with events happening throughout the film and ended up again in equilibrium at the end. Working Title would benefit from distributing my media product as it reaches out to a wide audience of both male and female of a varied age.

The intended audience for my media product is mostly females of a wide age range. Because of the family group and the events occurring in my media product, it may also appeal to males who can relate to the representation of a family situation. My media product was planned in order to attract a large age group. I think it is possible because whilst younger audience members can easily relate to the young character that appears throughout my film, older audience members, especially those with families of their own, can understand and emphasise with the parents and friends of the family.

I thought about different techniques to attract my audience and the main technique was the interesting story line, planned out in my film synopsis. Again, this uses a Todorov style storyline. I also planned to use characters and actors, if I carried on with my media product, which were likeable for the audience and well-known to encourage my audience to come and see the film, even without seeing a trailer.

The main storyline within my film is about a little girl called Hope. At a young age Hope gets a heart problem and spends much of her childhood in and out of hospitals. At the age of thirteen Hope is told that she has no choice and must have a life saving transplant. The rest of the film shows her fight with the law courts and hospital, her family life and the storylines which weave throughout these. My opening to my film is structured to look like a home made video that many parents make of their children when they are young. I have edited it into a montage to play whilst the credits are rolling. The actual filming of my media product did not pose any difficulties to me but once it came to editing my knowledge of technology was limited. Because I chose to use a personal camera, uploading my clips onto the computer was a long, boring task. After uploading them to memory stick each one had to be converted into a windows media format. After this my editing on Ulead was pretty simple. The montage style I chose meant simply choosing which clips to use and which not to use. The style I have used for my opening titles may look messy to someone who does not understand the thought behind it. It was easy to achieve this look as all I had to do was fade my clips together and add the audio track on top. This took some time as I decided not to have speech in my product. For each clip I had to erase the dialogue and put the music I have chosen on top.

Looking back at my preliminary task I feel I have learnt a lot progressing from that to my final media product. The time and work commitment involved in the prelim was a lot less than that involved in the main piece. Going from working in a team to working individually also proved difficult. Using my own camera also meant I came upon difficulties as uploading my clips onto the computer wasn’t as simple as it seemed. Working individually also gave me the chance to learn how to use the editing program properly and gave me complete freedom in choosing how I wanted my product to look.

Preliminary Task....

And here finally, is our first video....

Evaluation of the "walking down the corridor"...

Here we go...

Evaluation of Media Project One

We filmed our project down the E corridor. Before doing so we decided how we were going to structure our short film. Tom came up with the idea of using three different shots, one of a clock, one of someone drumming their fingers and one of someone walking down a corridor and rotating them until it shows the person walking into the room. When we filmed this we just continually filmed each separate thing and then cut them and put them together how we wanted when we edited. When we came to film someone walking through the door we used lots of different shots and angles. We did this so when we edited it we had lots of film to choose from and we could it together the best we could. For example we used a close up to show the hand opening the door handle. We also used to close up on the other side of the door to show the facial expression of the person through the glass of the door as they came through the door.

When we filmed the conversation it was a little boring because we had to film it over and over again from different angles in the room. When we first started we forgot to keep in line with the 18 degree rule and had to re film some of the angles we wanted to use for the conversation. Editing it was difficult because we had to fit the lines of the conversation together and make sure it was continuous and the close up and mid shots fit together and it didn’t jump from a mid shot to a close or the other way.

George and I had the conversation and we had to try and keep facial expressions and what we said each time exactly the same to make the editing easier.

When it came to editing we had to cut each shot as we played the whole thing. Then we cut each shot down to exactly what we wanted. The one with the clock we had to cut and delete some parts because we wanted the time to be continuous through out the film. We cut the drumming of the fingers in half with the second clip an extreme close up.

The other project we did...

So apparently the evaluation from the "walking down the corridor" thing we did has to go on here as well, so better late than never here's mine. I warn you, its pants...

x

Hopefully and finally finished...

I think I've finally finished everything I should have done, my film is complete along with music and everything. :) Yay, I've written my film conventions and comparisions essay and its on my blog. My story boards are all printed off and my evaluation is finished. Its like a massive weight off my shoulders :)

Film Coventions...

I looked at lots of different film genre's and watched the openings of four films to help me choose which genre to use for my film....Here are my comments about each of them...

Comparison of Film Openings.

License to Kill – 007; You tube; License to kill opening titles. Action film.
Opening of the film is a mix of animated pictures and real footage. It uses different special effects to move between each shot. For example wipes, dissolves and cuts. Some of the shots have a coloured tint added to them to change the colour of the whole shot and it uses silhouettes in different colours. For some shots there is no background scenery and is just simply a black colour. Uses slow motion for when the bullet is fired and you see it moving across the screen, pan and tracking. The credits are in white capital letters to stand out from the dark colours used. You don’t see any particular production design or costume and the sound is simply a pre recorded non – diegetic track to set the mood.

Chariots of fire; You tube; Chariots of fire – movie opening scene. Drama

It uses cross fades through out to suggest continuity between scenes. Uses a pan to show the characters running across the beach, to make the audience feel as though they are there with them. Cuts to a long shot to show them moving along the beach and tracks to show a man, a boy and a dog. The characters are wearing old fashioned running kit and clothes. For examples, flat caps, long boots and socks and blazers. The colours are very light pastel colours such as white, baby blue and sand. Cuts to show a very old mansion house, possibly sets the location and time period. The credits and title are in white text, capital letters and an old fashioned font.

Juno; You tube; Juno opening. Romantic Comedy

Starts with a black screen with the word “Autumn” fading in, white text, capital letters. Immediately sets time of film. Fades from black to long shot of house, immediately sets the location. Cuts to show the main character, long shot so you can see she is wearing modern clothes with a modern hairstyle. Its use of close-ups allows you to see facial expressions. Uses cut to express her flashback. It then switches to animated shots with the effect of being hand drawn. It uses a wipe to push each new shot onto the screen. It uses superimposition with more than one shot on the screen and the dissolve effect. Some shots are just the animation of the main character with just a plain coloured back ground behind her. It fades back from animation into real life. It uses 2 shots and OTS to show the facial expressions during the conversation.

Titanic; You tube; titanic opening credits. Romance thriller.

The difference between this and all the others is that its opening credits are in black and white instead of colour. This immediately suggests to the audience that it is an old film. It fades between shots of people waving and the boat. White text is used for the credits and it finally fades to a shot of the darkly lit water and then “titanic” fades in, in white capital letters.

Friday 1 May 2009

My Film Synopsis...

Blurb : “Growing up from a young age with a heart condition wasn’t ever going to be easy. But Hope dealt with it. Until now. Facing the threat of a heart transplant she took a deep breath and simply said “No.” She’s had enough.”

Hope has to deal with a heart condition, started from the drugs she took from leukaemia. The film starts with her as a small child with a grainy “home made” video and then goes on to show her legal battle and her bid to be allowed to go home and stay at home. The end of the film would show her win and living life to the full.

So the editing is finished....

So I've finished my editing and everything and now all that is left to do is finish my portfolio, I've written my evaluation which I need to post on here and all my storyboards and scripts need printing off and putting together. And everything has to be in by Thursday. Fun!

Tuesday 24 February 2009

Editing....

Finally, we have lift off in the editing department, it took ages! Cos I was the difficult one who decided to use her own camera, which had a card in it, it wouldn't upload normally, so we had to take it off and move it across computers and then move it again to convert it into a different format. And this is all before I even started editing it. Headache! But anyway its started now and the black screen and heart moniter sounds sound amazing I think :) but thats about as far as I've got...with two weeks to go. O dear.

Thursday 12 February 2009

SNOW....!

SNOW.....ok so it snowed....big woop. And the whole of England shut down for a few days even though we were expecting it and everything....It was so much fun. Only my video camera didn't shut down, and now my film has an added extra....SNOW!

So I went and visited the little girl who is playing my "young Hope" and we played in the snow and had a big snowball fight....brilliant on camera. :) The snow was good for one thing lol.

Editing....

After all my filming all thats left is just editing it and finding the perfect piece of music to go with it...

Tuesday 27 January 2009

More filming...

After editing the shots in the snow they looked really good but my opening needed something softer to go with the rest of my film so I decided to film some shots of Hope being read a bedtime story. I want this image to touch the hearts of my audience and make them want to carry on watching....

Tuesday 6 January 2009

Filming and snow...

I decided to start filming using my own camera and was very lucky in that two days after I started filming we had a heavy snowfall and I decided to use this in my film. The shots show Hope having a snowball fight with her family and friends.

Filming Technicalities...

After putting my idea forward to mum's goddaughters family I had the go ahead and starting planning my storyboard and the things that could happen in the rest of the films. I have recorded my ideas in a mind map:

The film would show Hope as she grew up and would not be an accurate showing of time, some parts would go quickly in time and others would not. I have included in the mind map things I would include in the storyline for the restof the film. The film would finish up with Hope winning the court case.

Actors and Locations...

After coming up with a nearly finalised idea I came up with some ideas for actors and costumes ect...My mum's goddaughter has just turned four and is the perfect little girl to act as "Hannah". I have decided to rename Hannah "Hope" as her story involves a lot of hope for her and her family and friends. I also wanted to include Hopes family and mainly her mother in my opening two minutes and have decided it would be easiest to use her real mum and family and their close relationship would come across in the film. Costumes are simple are they are every day wear and do not need to be selected. The only thing I need to remember is continuity if I am filming over a period of days.
